Transfer & recording facts — New Jersey
Who pays the transfer tax
For deeds submitted for recording on or after July 10, 2025, New Jersey places legal responsibility for transfer fees on the seller. A private contract may allocate payment differently; that does not change the seller’s statutory liability. The county recording officer still requires payment of the Realty Transfer Fee when it is owed.
